Continuing Scholarship Updates
November 2006
Dear Scholarship Committee:

The Old Assembly Hall or the Old Auditorium (Alte Aula), is located in the Old University |

Neue Universitaet (New University) |

Max-Weber Haus, which is a language institute run specifically for international students who are preparing for study at the University of Heidelberg |
Language classes and setting up my apartment kept me quite busy for the last month. Since September 6th I had been attending a German language course five days a week at the Max-Weber Haus, which is a language institute run specifically for international students who are preparing for study at the University of Heidelberg. My class ended In the first week of October, so now I have some time off until Orientation. Actual university courses begin on the 16th of October.
So far I’ve found Heidelberg to be absolutely wonderful! I live in the Old City where the Old University and the humanity-related fields are located. All the buildings are aged and beautiful; the main library reminds me of an old cathedral (and is possibly more ornate than one too!) Aside from the buildings, though, living here has it’s subtle differences.
I don’t need a car or bicycle because the public transportation is very reliable and student friendly, I now go to the bakery everyday to buy fresh bread, I have four different trash cans in my apartment for the different types of waste, and the city seems almost devoid of crime. I figure the worst criminal offence that the Heidelberger police might ever have to deal with is drunk bicycle riding!
The first, the Old Assembly Hall or the Old Auditorium (Alte Aula), is located in the Old University. It is used quite often for university ceremonies, celebrations, graduations, and other gatherings. The picture on the right is the Neue Universitaet or New University.
The statue is of Pallas Athena and above the portal is written “Dem lebendigen Geist” (The Living Spirit) which, after the Second World War, belonged to the longer phrase “dem lebendigen Geist der Wahrheit, Gerechtigkeit und Humanitaet zu dienen.” It means that the University of Heidelberg is obliged “to serve the living spirit of Truth, Justice, and Humanity.” It should be noted that “Geist” can
mean any of the following things: ghost, spirit, mind, intellect, psyche, etc. The Alte Universitaet (Old University), which houses the University Museum, the Alte Aula, and the Studentenkarzer (old student prison). The student prison is also part of the Museum.
Sincerely,
Sophia Clark
