The Sacramento Chapter held its meeting on August 28, 2006, its main focus was on Vehicle Safety. Russ Lumley, CHP Commercial Officer, *CIPE Valley Division, combined two presentations, Pre-trip Inspection and Driver Safety Rules of the Road. Do you know what amount of tire damage will put you OUT OF SERVICE? What inspectors are looking for at the scales or at road side inspections? Do you know the differences between an Infraction and Misdemeanor? Do you know why the far right lane is the truck lane? How about when you can legally have your flasher on? You will after seeing these presentations. Everyone at the meeting learned something new. I would encourage all chapter chairs to contact their local CIEP office and schedule a chapter meeting. We all need to be safe, informed, educated, and in compliance.
Our chapter has been working with Officer Lumley for the last few years. He has made himself available to the Chapter for meeting, and been our “Go to Guy” for questions. His 25 years of experience have made him a valuable resource to our Chapter. We all wish him well in his new position with CHP “Commercial Industry Education Program”. The picture of the van is Officer Lumley’s new transport, no more black and white truck.
*The presentations are part of the CHP “Commercial Industry Education Program” (CIEP). For more information on the program, CIPE locations and phone numbers, see the June 2006 issue of California Transportation News, page 28. Or on the web at www.cdtoa.org
The next chapter meeting is October

Dewey Martin |
On August 18, 2006, a good friend, a great supporter of CDTOA, Dewey Martin passed away. Many of you remember Dewey along with his wife Louise attending quarterly meetings throughout the state. Many great summer CDTOA chapter picnics were held at his home, we all enjoyed Dewey and Louise’s hospitality. After retiring, he continued to support the industry he loved so well as a director for the Sacramento Chapter.
In December 2004, at the annual Christmas party for the Sacramento chapter he was given a plaque for over 30 years of commitment to CDTOA. Always committed to giving a helping hand to someone starting in the business he often sold guys their first truck, help guys work on and learn how to maintain there truck to become successful in dump trucking. He believed it was important to learn about the industry and CDTOA is the only organization just for dump truckers.
My thoughts go out to Louise and the family for their loss, Dewey was loved by many and a surrogate father to a lucky few. I was one of those lucky people and give Dewey and Louise credit for the patient and understanding they showed to many newcomers in this industry. When remembering Dewey, the times were different but the joy of watching him get his first new truck, or building a shop to work on the trucks out of the weather, or pouring cocktails (shop supplies) for the troops at the end of a successful day will forever bring smiles to me. We have lost a great guy. I’ll miss Ya.
