Effective May 19, 2009
If you recently received a renewal letter for your vehicle registration, you might have noticed a slight increase in the amount over prior years. The Legislature authorized the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to increase the Vehicle License Fee (VLF) from .65 percent to 1.15 percent of the price of the vehicle – a change which went into effect May 19, 2009.

The number of traffic fatalities continued to fall in 2008, reported the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fatalities dropped 9.7 percent between 2007 and 2008, from 41,259 to 37,261. The economic slowdown was undoubtedly a factor but the fatal accident rate also fell to an historic low of an estimated 1.27 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled or VMT. That's an estimate based on a trend - final 2008 VMT numbers have not been compiled yet.

Governor Calls Legislature into Prop 58 Special Session, Issues Executive Order to Impose Three Furloughs per Month
Following the legislature’s inability to pass a comprehensive solution to solve California’s entire $24.3 billion deficit, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today proclaimed a fiscal emergency and called a Proposition 58 legislative special session to address this emergency.
