A federal judge in Chicago on May is issued temporary restraining orders to shut down telemarketing campaign that made hundreds of millions of allegedly deceptive “robo-cals” promoting vehicle warranty contracts. The Federal Trade Commission requested the restraining orders against three companies in early May, and they were granted by Judge John Grady of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The prerecorded, automated telemarketing calls made to cell phones and landlines have been deceiving consumers into thinking their car warranties are expiring, and pitching sales of service contracts falsely portrayed as extended warranties, the commission said.
